Wendy Colonna
August 2, 2019

Wendy Colonna may have played more HubCityMusic.com house concerts than any other artist. There’s a reason for that – We absolutely LOVE her! And once again we were thrilled to welcome her back Friday August 2, 2019 at Paul and Claire’s house.

Wendy is one of the most versatile and prolific songwriters to ever grace our stage. And the diversity of her music means there is absolutely something for everyone.
Wendy is enjoying the success of a balanced family and music life, and her performances are better than ever! Her album “No Moment But Now” has songs simultaneously featured on Apple Music’s “Hot Tracks” and “Breaking Singer Songwriter Playlist”, as well as Spotify’s “Fresh Folk” playlist. Wendy is garnering critical acclaim from multiple outlets including the New York Times (describing her music as “ethereal”), and she was selected as a 2017 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Finalist. The Austin American-Statesman long ago recognized Wendy as “Austin’s Best Singer/Songwriter”, and that word is now out around the nation.

And you may want to visit her website and see the Coca-Cola commercial that she wrote the song for! (see link below) Wendy has a phenomenal website!

August 11, 2017

HubCityMusic.com house concerts was excited to again host Wendy Colonna in an intimate house concert on Friday August 11, 2017!  The weather was perfect for a backyard concert, as the entire yard was in the shade by the time the concert started.

Wendy opened strong with the song featured on her newest video release, “Girls Like Me”. (view video HERE)  The song selection was perfect for the entire concert, as Wendy played a great mix of her newest songs from “No Moment But Now” interspersed with a great selection of the strongest songs in her now-vast repertoire.  It was a perfect concert on a perfect evening, and a great reminder why we love this amazing singer/songwriter.

Wendy Colonna is enjoying the success of back-to-back critically acclaimed album releases, and as significant as that would be for anyone else, it’s just the tip of Wendy’s Good News iceberg!

Last summer she married the love of her life, Ryan Doty, and just a few weeks ago they welcomed their new son, Charlie into the world!  And between those two blessed dates, she created her newest, and most acclaimed album, “No Moment But Now”, all the while continuing to perform for enthusiastic audiences in multiple locations, including the 2017 Kerrville Folk Festival.  To say Wendy has been busy would be an understatement of the highest order, just as it would be to say she has been blessed on a personal and professional level.  She is beyond blessed!

“No Moment But Now”, has songs simultaneously featured on Apple Music’s “Hot Tracks” and “Breaking Singer Songwriter Playlist”, as well as Spotify’s “Fresh Folk” playlist.

Expect more great news and great music from Wendy in the near future, but right now, enjoy her intimate and personal house concert while you can, because big things are on the way for this extraordinarily gifted songwriter and performer!

Wendy ColonnaAfter almost 6 years of hosting house concerts, Paul Johnson’s house will see its last and final house concert on June 10th.  (Don’t worry, we are not quitting – we are moving! In the future, all of our concerts will be held in the new Paul and Claire’s house!  Now we can have the option of both indoor and outdoor concerts.)
We can’t think of a better entertainer to cap this great run of concerts than one of our all-time favorites, Wendy Colonna.

Wendy Colonna has long been one of our favorite musicians. A blend of blues, rock, soul and folk, Wendy has a surprise waiting around the corner with every song. She will take you from sultry and slow, to rockin’ and rollin’, and everywhere in between, with an emotional delivery that few artists even attempt. She gets lost in her delivery, and believe me, you will too.

Wendy has achieved amazing success, releasing a new CD (“Nectar”) to national critical acclaim, having her music chosen by Starbucks for national play in their stores, and having her song “A Happy Song” chosen by Coca Cola to back a national TV and movie theater ad campaign. Other highlights of Wendy’s trajectory also include: selection as a Wall Street Journal pick for “Best Music Acts” at SXSW 2014; featured co-vocalist in the Grammy/MusicCares All-Star Showcase; and interviews on both NPR’s Beale Street Caravan and WFUV’s Sunday Breakfast (NYC).

But what matters most is how Wendy connects with her audience, and those of you who have attended one of her previous concerts at Paul Johnson’s house can attest. This will definitely be a “don’t-miss” concert!

Wendy Colonna is on her way to a very special place, all her own, in the music industry. If you haven’t hitched your musical exposure to her star yet, get on board now. It will be a wonderful ride!

What an amazing concert!  And what a treasure Wendy Colonna is! She kept us captivated with her wonderful music and stories.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWendy Colonna had a phenomenal 2014, releasing a new CD (“Nectar”) to national critical acclaim, having her music chosen by Starbucks for national play in their stores, and having her song “A Happy Song” chosen by Coca Cola to back a national TV and movie theater ad campaign.  Recent highlights of Wendy’s trajectory also include: selection as a Wall Street Journal pick for “Best Music Acts” at SXSW 2014; featured co-vocalist in the Grammy/MusicCares All-Star Showcase; and interviews on both NPR’s Beale Street Caravan and WFUV’s Sunday Breakfast (NYC).  (and those are just a few of her many 2014 highlights!)

Wendy is looking forward to an even more amazing 2015, and we are blessed that she has chosen to include Paul Johnson’s house in her early-2015 touring schedule.

Naturally, we feel like all of our house concerts are “don’t miss” events. But this one was truly special. Accompanied by the versatile musical genius Cary Banks, Wendy lit up the stage, with emotive energy that matched the breadth and depth of her songwriting.  There’s just no one genre to contain this lady, and she brought us through a range of emotions and feelings, ranging from the upbeat joy of her surprise hit, “A Happy Song”, through the sultry recall of another era in “Dance With the Moon”, to the decidedly Texas-influenced “Texas Summer Love”.  As if that weren’t enough variety, she swung us to another shade of the musical spectrum with the ballad “Bring Me Water”, and definitely got the house rocking with “Dirty Things”.  And she kept us riding this roller coaster of emotional diversity all night long.

Wendy Colonna

Wendy Colonna – voted Austin’s “Best Singer Songwriter” (Austin American Statesman)

Wendy Colonna combines the heart and soul of her Louisiana roots with the funky refinement of her current Austin domicile, and the result is a sophisticated, sexy, soulful sound that is all her own, yet remains accessible and inviting.  A masterful songwriter, her poetic lyrics have an interesting edge that connote meaning beyond words, and her delivery – which can vary between melodic and gritty – brings them home with soulful style.

A multi-year regular at the Buddy Holly Summer Showcase, Wendy has performed two annual HubCityMusic.com house concerts at Paul Johnson’s house, each time sharing the kind of intimate evening that can only occur in the eye-contact environment that is unique to the house concert format.

Here is a video of a wonderful song, “Vacancy”, from Wendy’s recent concert:

This is a video from Wendy’s HubCityMusic.com house concert last year:

A review of this song on Amazon.com:
Wendy Colonna is one of those artists that must be seen live to really appreciate the depth of the soul she brings to her music. “Shine” is a great example – you haven’t experienced this song until you hear it live. There are a few versions of it on YouTube, each different from the others, based on who she has accompanying her at any given time. But any version of a great song is still great, and that is certainly true with “Shine”. It has a rocking, rolling, rhythm & blues fundamental that is spiced up with some of Wendy’s back-home Louisiana influence.

Beyond the pure musical appeal of this song is a message that is worth hearing. This song was inspired by a quote from Turkish poet and activist Nazim Hikmet: If I do not burn If you do not burn If we do not burn How will darkness come to light?

Certainly a message we can all take to heart – If we do not spend ourselves burning brightly, how else will darkness disappear?

This level of excellence in both music and message is compelling, and makes this song a worthwhile addition to your musical and philosophical libraries.
