10th ANNUAL
Harvest Moon Concert!
The full Hat Trick band!
Friday September 13th

Mike Pritchard and Mark Wallney have performed our annual Harvest Moon concert since day One. For our 10th ANNIVERSARY concert, we decided to ask them to bring the full Hat Trick band! So Mike Boyd and Bobby McDowell will bring the beat, adding their bass, harmony, and drums to bring what promises to be our best Harvest Moon concert yet!

Click here to RSVP or for more information

Our 10th Annual Harvest Moon Concert is more than a concert. It’s about a love story.

Claire and Paul Johnson had been dating for close to a year when Paul privately approached Mike Pritchard, Mark Wallney, and Mike Boyd about performing in Paul’s living room.
Claire loved The Hat Trick’s version of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon”, and Paul arranged to have The Hat Trick and a group of friends waiting in the living room when Paul and Claire pulled up to the house on a date – the date of the actual Harvest Moon on September 22, 2010.

Claire had no idea anything was going on, and when Claire and Paul walked into the living room, The Hat Trick was playing Harvest Moon, and the room was full of friends!

That was the First Ever Harvest Moon concert, and it was a special date. After that first concert, Paul and Claire have continued to host an annual Harvest Moon concert – featuring either The Hat Trick, or in later years, Mike Pritchard and Mark Wallney – every year on the Friday closest to the actual date of each year’s official Harvest Moon.

So that’s the story of our annual Harvest Moon concerts. It has always been a meaningful anniversary in our love story, and is a reminder of love for each other, life, and friends.

Fast forward to 2019, and we saw the opportunity to make this year’s 10th Annual Harvest Moon Concert even more special!

This year we will host the FULL HAT TRICK BAND – including Mike Pritchard, Mark Wallney, Mike Boyd, AND drummer Bobby McDowell – for the first time!
And we want to make sure that everyone who wants to come can attend, so we’ve reserved a beautiful venue that can accommodate the full band plus as many of our friends as possible.

So this year’s 10th Annual Harvest Moon Concert will be held at a beautiful spot in south Lubbock owned by Robert Rogers, called Art Canyon. Here’s the location information:

ART CANYON – 16716 CR 2040 (1/4 mi south of Woodrow Road & CR 2040)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Go south on Indiana to Woodrow Road
  2. Turn west (right) on Woodrow Road
  3. Turn south (left) on CR 2040 (first street you can turn left)
  4. Go about 1/4 mile to the gate on the right with the Art Canyon sign
  5. Enter the gate and go to the house at the bottom of the road

Robert will graciously be providing free Barbeque, and food will be available starting at 6:30pm, with the music starting at 7:30pm. (No one should feel obligated to bring anything, but many people ask about bringing putluck food items. Just remember that BBQ is provided, so complimentary dishes and desserts are appreciated.)

One last item: We are paying two more musicians than recent years, we are renting a nice facility to accommodate everyone, and Robert Rogers is providing BBQ. We wrestled over this, but some kind of price increase was necessary for this 10th Anniversary year, and we finally settled on admission of $30 a person. That’s only $10 more than it was 10 years ago, and we hope the extra effort will be more than worth it!

So here’s a summary:
WHAT: 10th Annual Harvest Moon Concert
WHEN: Friday September 13,2019
FOOD SERVICE: 6:30pm
MUSIC DOWNBEAT: 7:30pm
LOCATION: Art Canyon
ADDRESS: 16716 CR 2040
OTHER: Free BBQ, BYOB
TICKETS: $30/person, paid in advance

Because of high demand and limited seating, RSVP and prepayment will be necessary for attendance. You can pay using your credit card via the Donate link when you RSVP, or you may mail a check to the address given at the RSVP page.

7th Annual Harvest Moon House Concert

Colin Gilmore & Nicolette Good
Friday November 16, 2018

Colin Gilmore and Nicolette Good began playing and singing as a duo in 2014 after hearing each other’s compelling songwriting.

Colin Gilmore, a Lubbock native and son of well-known Lubbock singer/songwriter/recording artist Jimmie Dale Gilmore, spent many nights as a child in nightclubs such as Stubbs, where he witnessed songwriters like Joe Ely, Terry Allen and his own father, Jimmie Dale Gilmore. He developed a taste for Buddy Holly, Townes Van Zandt and bands such as The Clash and The Pogues.

Gilmore has been writing, performing and touring for more than a decade. His latest release, The Wild and Hollow, recorded in Austin and Chicago, showcases rich arrangements and instrumentation while still leaning on his roots rock and singer/songwriter foundation.

Nicolette Good is a Texas singer-songwriter and 2012 winner of the Kerrville New Folk competition. In a voice that’s at once refined and raw, Nicolette sings with penetrating insight about hope, wrenching love, and the mysteries of everyday life.

Her clever and effortless storytelling shines in toe-tappers like “Aloha” and “All the Time in the World”.  Songs like “Hurricane Caroline” tell intimate stories of enigmatic, tragic characters. Nicolette released “Little Boat on a Wave” (2015) following a residential artist program called The Lighthouse Works in New York. Critics have called her “a songwriter to follow” and “a poet of the first order.”

Together, Colin and Nicolette bring an irresistibly compelling melding of voices that are each haunting and melodic in their own right, with the whole being somehow greater than the sum of the parts.

When: Friday November 16, 2018

Tickets: $20 each. (100% of all money received goes to our guest musicians.)

BYOB. Complimentary snacks and bottled water are provided.

Cary Banks CD release concert
October 19, 2018
with special guests
Steve “Gittar” Williams, Jerry Brownlow,
and Megan Poppe

Cary Banks and Steve “Gittar” Williams

Due to the unexpected passing of Claire’s aunt, Claire and Paul had to be out of town to attend the funeral on the date of this concert.

Through the kindness of Van and Leslie Shaw, we made arrangements to move the location to Uncle Bill’s Music Barn where our Harvest Moon concert was also held.

Legendary Maines Brothers Band member Cary Banks performed a special CD release concert on Friday October 19, 2018. This is Cary’s 4th CD as a solo artist, and he will have early release copies of this new CD, called simply “Piano”, for sale at this concert. Cary was accompanied throughout the concert by guitar virtuoso Steve “Gittar” Williams, who also performs on Cary’s new CD. Also joining them for selected songs were Maines Brothers Band member Jerry Brownlow, and violinist Megan Poppe.

Those who know Cary are aware that he is one of the most versatile musicians around, having excelling skills with multiple instruments and musical styles and genres. In addition, there is no one who has more fun performing than Cary Banks. He is a delightful entertainer, and is sure to captivate every audience.

“Piano” by Glen Garnett. This original 15″ x 15″ album cover art will be auctioned to the highest bidder at this concert.

The phenomenal cover art for Cary’s new CD is an original painting by the talented Glen Garnett, also titled “Piano”. The original piece was not only on display at this concert, it was auctioned to the highest bidder during the concert! The chance to own this original artwork is exciting to say the least! Glen has commissioned an extremely limited run of 10 high quality, signed and numbered prints (mounted on dryboard) of this piece, and these were also for sale at this concert. There will never be another print sold beyond these 10. See “Piano” and more of Glen Garnett’s work at his website: https://www.glenartstudio.com

All in all, this was an unforgettable evening!

When: Friday October 19, 2018 at Uncle Bill’s Music Barn.

7th Annual Harvest Moon House Concert

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR EFFORTS to bring great music in a wonderful atmosphere to Lubbock!

Because of the cold, windy weather and threat of rain, our good friends Van and Leslie Shaw generously offered to let us move this 9th Annual Harvest Moon concert from our back yard to Uncle Bill’s Music Barn, located behind their house. It’s such a great venue for this type event, and as a result we were able to accommodate a significantly larger audience than if we had moved the concert from our backyard to the family room inside our home. Thanks Van and Leslie!

Our 9th Annual Harvest Moon Concert was held Friday September 21, 2018, and a wonderful time was had by all.

It’s hard to believe this was our 9th Annual Harvest Moon Concert! It marks an anniversary of sorts for Claire and Paul, as the first one was about the one-year mark from when we started dating. Who knew that all these years later, we would be married and still celebrating love and life with our friends every Harvest Moon?!

And, of course, it wouldn’t be the same without another outstanding performance by our dear friends Mike Pritchard and Mark Wallney, who got this whole thing started in the first place with their better-than-original performances of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon”, which they would always play with a dedication to Claire every time Claire and Paul went on a date anywhere Mike and Mark were playing. Their performance of this romantic and seasonally appropriate song sets the stage for a relaxing evening of undeniable musical and vocal talent.

So here we are at our 9th annual celebration of life, love, and friends, at the time of each fall’s Harvest moon – the full moon closest to the Autumnal equinox. Often, the harvest moon seems to be bigger or brighter or more colorful than other full moons, so it’s a great time to enjoy a romantic concert.

And it marks the beginning of the change of seasons, reminding us of the passing of time, and how important it is to share our time with those we love. There are a lot of special things about this 9th Annual Harvest Moon concert. Considering that our very first Harvest Moon concert was a surprise party for Claire, it’s nice how things have come full circle.

As with all of our previous Harvest Moon concerts, this concert played to a SOLD OUT audience.

Thanks to all who shared this special evening with us!

Tori Vasquez
May 13, 2017

We are always so excited to host Tori Vasquez in a rare, intimate solo house concert! Most of you know Tori as the youngest daughter of Lubbock musicians Junior and Mickie Vasquez, and indeed Tori has made a name uniquely her own in the Lubbock music scene.

Having been pulled away from Lubbock by her burgeoning music career, Tori is now based out of Austin, with her husband Shannon Smith.  Although recently focusing on performing with their band The Battlin’ Nelsons, Tori is taking a one-time break from that format, instead choosing to come back to Lubbock to perform an intimate and rare solo house concert on Saturday May 13th, at Paul and Claire’s house.

Tori has chosen a set list that includes some old covers and originals that she hasn’t played in a long time, interspersed with some new songs you may not have heard her perform.

Join us for this rare opportunity to hear Tori solo in her home town, in an environment that is more close up and personal than any other.

Sarah McQuaid
Friday October 23rd

Sarah McQuaidClick here for more information or to RSVP

International performer Sarah McQuaid makes a rare Lubbock appearance on Friday October 23rd in an intimate HubCityMusic.com house concert.  All the way from England, Sarah has found a broad audience in the United States, and is in the midst of a nationwide CD release tour, introducing her fourth solo CD.  Entitled “Walking into White”, this newest release is receiving rave reviews.  Here are a few samples of the response this CD is receiving:

“Luminous … a soft but forceful record whose urgency is sometimes masked by the music’s acoustic serenity.” —The Boston Globe

“The more we spin this one, the better it sounds.” —BabySue

“Jaw-droppingly beautiful … tender and gorgeous.” —Invisible Ink Music Blog

We are extremely fortunate and grateful that Sarah’s schedule makes this concert possible.

Sarah’s voice has been likened to malt whiskey, melted chocolate and “honey poured into wine”. Her new album Walking Into White (2015) is her most honest and adventurous work to date, with a depth and texture of soundscape that are reflected in her beautifully crafted live shows. A captivating performer, she seduces her audience with cheeky banter and stories from the road, as well as with stunning musicianship; in her hands, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying instrument.

You won’t want to miss her unique vocals and accompanying guitar, as well as the sound magic that accompanying sound technician Martin Stansbury brings to the room.  It will be an amazing performance!

John Batdorf
Wednesday March 4, 2015
(with Junior Vasquez opening)

P1060923-Adjusted - 300x230In 1975 John Batdorf headlined a concert as Batdorf & Rodney in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Opening for them that night was Junior Vasquez and Peyote. Many of you were at that concert. If you loved the Eagles, Crosby Stills & Nash, and America, you should know that Batdorf and Rodney were part of that whole music scene.

Now 40 years later, history has repeated itself, as John Batdorf again headlined a Lubbock concert, which again was opened by Junior Vasquez. These two great musicians have each evolved over the years, but their music remains as complimentary as ever.

This is the first HubCityMusic.com house concert to ever have an opening act.

The weather outside was frightful – snow and freezing sleet all afternoon the day of the show.  But the fans braved the weather and showed up anyway, and John and Junior provided a magical evening of music and conversation.  For Junior Vasquez, this was a rare opportunity to perform all original songs, and he showed that his songwriting ability is as polished and professional as his singing and guitar work.

And when John Batdorf took the stage he demonstrated a commitment to excellence in vocals and guitar play that is second to none.  Seriously, you won’t hear a more flawless performance than John delivered on that snowy night in the warmth of our living room.

Sarah McQuaid
Friday October 24, 2014

Requested by popular demand, Sarah McQuaidwe were pleased to host vocalist and singer/songwriter, Sarah McQuaid, in a HubCityMusic.com house concert on Friday October 24, 2014.  Sarah kept an enthusiastic audience spellbound with her silky smooth vocals, and engineer Martin Stansbury made his own unique and artistic contributions to the amazing sound.  Sarah McQuaid definitely delivered the most unique voice to the HubCityMusic.com stage that we have ever experienced, and everyone who was in attendance was entranced.  We will be hosting Sarah again in October 2015 for a CD release tour appearance, and you won’t want to miss that return visit!

Coming to West Texas all the way from England, Sarah was born in Spain, raised in Chicago, spent 13 years in Ireland and currently lives with her family in Cornwall, England.  Ireland is where she started her music career, and it is clearly a place that means a lot to her: “I do love Ireland. I lived there for 13 years, my children were both born in Ireland and my husband’s from Ireland.”

Sarah has toured all over the world, in places such as Ireland, England, Spain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and across the United States.

She has released 4 albums, all to great critical acclaim, and has also authored a book, titled “The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book”.

Sarah McQuaid’s voice is amazing, with a range from low and sultry to sweet and high.  In many ways her voice is reminiscent of Carly Simon, as well as Joni Mitchell, and also reminds me of another vocalist from England with incredible vocal range, Julia Fordham.

But of course, despite inevitable comparisons, Sarah is her own artist, with her own unique sound.

A few quotes regarding Sarah:

“Rising star Sarah McQuaid’s voice has been likened to malt whiskey, melted chocolate and “honey poured into wine”.

Sarah’s third solo album, “The Plum Tree and the Rose”, has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: “Impeccable” wrote fRoots (UK), while Midwest Record (USA) called it “low key but glorious and incendiary”, and Hot Press (Ireland) said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs.”

Check back here for video clips from her October 24, 2014 HubCityMusic.com house concert.

John Batdorf retro - 240x306

If you loved America, Crosby Stills & Nash, Dan Fogelberg, Loggins & Messina, and the Eagles in the 1970’s, chances are you also heard a group called Batdorf and Rodney. Great songwriters, with a sound very much like the above groups, Batdorf and Rodney had two very successful albums in the 1970’s before going their separate ways.

We were blessed to have this opportunity to host a rare mid-week house concert featuring John Batdorf of Batdorf and Rodney.
John has continued to write, play, and record since those early days, and his music is better than ever.  And even if you’ve never heard of him, trust me, John is an amazing musician and songwriter.  If you missed this HubCityMusic.com house concert, you missed one of the best-ever concerts we’ve had the pleasure to host!

P1060923-Adjusted - 300x230

Some notable background – In 1975, John Batdorf visited Lubbock when Batdorf and Rodney played a concert at the (then) Lubbock Municipal Coliseum (now City Bank Coliseum), and shared the stage with opening act Peyote, headed by local music legend Junior Vasquez.

John & Junior - 300x225

So in a full-circle sort of coincidence, John and Junior once again shared the stage, this time to close out John’s house concert, performing an impromptu duet of “For What It’s Worth”.  What an incredible experience it was to see those two on the same stage together almost 40 years later!

Watch for a video of John Batdorf and Junior Vasquez performing “For What It’s Worth”, on this page in a week or two.

Kelley McRae DuoIn the last 2 years, the Kelley McRae duo has played over 300 shows coast to coast and traveled over 75,000 miles in their VW van. Along the way they encountered the people and places that inspired the songs on their recently released third album, BRIGHTER THAN THE BLUES.

Kelley’s music can be described as heartfelt Americana carrying a sense of hope and light, and she has found impressive fans: Paste Magazine gave her four stars, and WNYC’s ‘Soundcheck’ named her performance one of the year’s best.
(If samples of Kelley’s music did not start playing when you landed on this page, click “Kelley McRae compilation” at the upper right column of this page.)

Kelley McRae DuoThe duo has performed at such venues as The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, The Red Clay Theatre in Atlanta, and The Living Room in NYC, and has performed with The David Wax Museum, Kim Richey, and Rose Cousins, among others.

Previously residing in NYC, the duo is currently writing and recording new material in a cabin in the Nantahala Forest of North Carolina. In 2014 they are embarking on a seven week European Tour as well as headlining the TVFCU Stage at The Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, TN on Friday, June 6th.

When adding our HubCityMusic.com venue to their resume, Kelley and Matt brought their “A” game, performing with incredible vocals and musicianship.  And they earned our respect in regard to their songwriting ability, as well.  Kelley and Matt are as well matched in regard to creative songwriting as they are in regard to vocals, instrumentation, and marriage.  This is one of those couples that was destined to find each other, and we are so glad they did!

Here is their HubCityMusic.com performance of their original “Brighter Than the Blues”

…and here is their HubCityMusic.com performance of their new original “Fair Weather”
